Slut Shaming: The Shade of it All

For a long time women have been placed in a number of boxes be it the bitch vs. the pushover, the geek vs. the rebel and to go along with this week’s topic – the whore vs. the virgin. For far too long women who enjoy sex have been deemed whores, sluts, lose and a cascade of other demeaning words. While men who sleep around have always been considered kings among men. We don’t have to point out the obvious, but it’s one of the oldest double standard out there. Thankfully women (and a good amount of men!) ain’t about that and have been taking a stance against slut shaming. From Slut Walks to realizing they can take the initiative to swipe right without being called a promiscuous girl.

That’s how it’s been though, right? You remember what middle and high school was like, hell even college. A girl sleeps with more than one guy and is rocking a Scarlet Letter the rest of her life, while her guy friend is getting high fives all around for scoring with a couple of “sluts” he met at a party last weekend. Um, what? Name calling aside, what that perpetuates is the whole rape culture. The idea that women “ask for it” by acting or dressing a certain way because in some people believe that’s a thing. When in reality it is never the person who got sexually assaulted fault. No matter what they tell you at eight year’s old about being more “careful” because you’re developing faster than other girls.

There’s the unfair names tossed at women for wanting to be sexually active, and then there the results like perpetuating that it is a woman’s fault for being raped. All of this is a product of slut shaming, and is why it’s a big deal when people like Amber Rose stand up and have their Slut Walks around Los Angeles. To just sit there and tweet about it, what’s good is that going to do? You have to be proactive for change. The best way to start is to stop attacking sexually active women on a personal level. So your friend wants to sleep with a few guys this week? As long as she’s being safe, she’s fine. Plus, that’s her business. That’s the bigger picture no one realizes. It’s that whoever you share your bed with is your business and your business only.

This week we’ll talk to a woman who was shamed at a very young age, get personal, get down with Amber Rose and then some.
